Dr Fábio Silva

Senior Research Engineer

Fábio joined the International Energy Research Centre (IERC), in October 2020, to contribute to the projects of the Energy Informatics Group (EIG). His role involves supporting the development of software applications in various areas, including building energy management and modelling, energy system integration, and energy poverty, as well as contributing to the development of exploitation policies, business models, and project funding proposals.

Fábio holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, an International Executive MBA in E-business (conducted in partnership with Ohio University, USA), a postgraduate in Software Engineering, and a Professional Master’s in Management and Technology in Production Systems. Fábio also holds a PhD from the School of Electronic Engineering at Dublin City University in Ireland and is a Senior IEEE member.

Fábio has extensive professional experience as a consultant and entrepreneur, having participated in five startup companies, and serving as a co-founder in two of them. He pioneered the application of multimedia and touch-screen technologies, leading the development of hardware, software, and services across Brazil. Subsequently, Fábio has worked in startup companies spanning various industries in Brazil, including logistics, e-commerce, system integration, EDI solutions, fintech, critical transactional systems, and credit cards.

In 2016, Fábio was invited to enroll in a PhD program at Dublin City University, dedicating his first PhD year to Universidad San Pablo in Madrid, Spain. His research encompasses a wide array of technologies, including Virtual Reality communication performance, Mulsemedia, distributed and scalable e-learning infrastructure, the Internet of Things, machine learning, and more. His research has been funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme, specifically through grants 688503 and 870610, as well as by the Science Foundation Ireland through grants 13/RC/2094 (Lero), 16/SP/3804 (ENABLE), and 12/RC/2289_P2 (Insight).

Due to his participation in various conferences and events, and also due to his professional experience, Fábio has developed activities across several countries, such as Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additionally, Fábio has provided support to undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students.

TRIDENT (DTIF)

The TRIDENT consortium has been successful in securing €3.65 million in funding from the Irish Government’s Disruptive Technology Innovation Fund to develop a sustainable sodium-ion smart battery system.
